On 21 October 2026, Sony released PS5 system software version 26.07-14.20.00, its second firmware update of the month. The official patch note is a single line: “We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.” Gaming sites such as PlayStation LifeStyle, Push Square and GameSpot still paid close attention, because of the timing. The update arrived four weeks before Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November, and right after hackers claimed fresh progress against the previous firmware.
If you live in Delhi, Noida or Gurugram and someone is offering you a “jailbroken” PS5 loaded with free games, or a cheap imported unit without an Indian bill, this matters to you. A console that has to stay on old firmware to keep its hack working may not sign in to PlayStation Network, may not run new releases, and may not have a valid warranty.
If your real goal is to play GTA 6 for a few weeks or host a launch weekend, there is a simpler route. Renting an official, unmodified PS5 on updated firmware gets you a console that is ready to play without the gamble. You can rent a PS5 for GTA 6 in Delhi and skip the risk entirely. Here is how the firmware story, bans and warranty rules fit together.
What did Sony’s 14.20 PS5 update actually change?
Officially, very little. Sony’s notes mention screens and messages, and the download is roughly 1.2 GB. Sony has not said that 14.20 fixes any security issue.
The context is what makes it interesting. Version 14.20 is the third PS5 firmware update since 16 September. According to GameSpot and TechPowerUp, a public exploit called Relapse worked on firmware up to 13.60, and the 14.00 update in mid-September disrupted it. Version 14.10 followed on 1 October with security fixes. Polygon then reported that, as of 20 October, a developer had shown a private exploit running on 14.10. Sony shipped 14.20 a day later.
Several outlets suspect 14.20 quietly closes more holes. Sony has not confirmed that, so treat it as informed speculation. What is clear is the pattern: each update makes life harder for modified consoles.
Why does firmware matter so much for GTA 6?
GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has confirmed that the boxed edition contains a download code, not a disc, and that preloading starts on 12 November. In practice, every PS5 copy goes through PlayStation’s digital systems.
Two more details are worth knowing. A datamining account called PlayStation Game Size reported that the launch version of GTA 6 needs firmware 14.10. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed this. Players have also reported that Sony now requires 14.10 to sign in to PSN.
Put those together and the problem is obvious. A console held back on older firmware to keep a jailbreak alive could be shut out of the biggest launch of the year. Updating it usually removes the jailbreak, and Sony’s terms prohibit installing older system software, so there is no clean way back.
What are the real risks of buying a jailbroken PS5?
The first risk is online access. Sony’s terms prohibit using modified software and bypassing the console’s security. PlayStation’s Terms of Service also allow Sony to suspend a console. A suspended PS5 cannot use PSN services, online play or the PlayStation Store, whichever account you sign in with. The restriction follows the hardware, so a second buyer can inherit a problem they did not cause.
How often Sony actually bans modded consoles is less clear. An alleged ban reported from Turkey in early October circulated widely, but it remains unconfirmed. The rules allow it, and that is enough reason to be careful.
The second risk is warranty. Sony’s own PS5 support page warns that installing updates from unofficial sources, or on a console that has been altered or modified, can void the system warranty and affect repair services.
The third risk is content. Jailbreaks are popular mainly because they can run pirated games. Pirated games are unauthorised copies, and we are not going to point anyone towards them. This post is general information, not legal advice.
The last risk is simply being stuck. A hacked console tends to live on old firmware, which means missing new features, new games and online play over time.
Is a grey-market or unauthorised-seller PS5 any safer?
Not every grey-market console is modded, but the warranty problem still applies. Sony India’s dealer page says Sony provides warranty only on products bought from authorised resellers, and that a product from an unauthorised reseller may not be eligible for the manufacturer’s one-year limited warranty. Sony India’s warranty terms also say the warranty is for the first end user and is void for second resale through e-commerce sellers or offline dealers.
Imported units can be a further gamble. Sony India has previously advised buyers to look for the official Sony India warranty card. With a used or imported console, you also cannot easily tell whether it was modified at some point.
If you do buy, ask for a proper invoice and warranty card, and check the seller against Sony India’s authorised dealer locator first.
Should you rent or buy a PS5 for GTA 6 in Delhi NCR?
The rent vs buy question comes down to how long you will play. If you expect to use a PS5 for years, buying a new one from an authorised dealer, with an invoice and warranty, makes sense. We have run the numbers in our PS5 price in India vs renting cost breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a jailbroken PS5 be able to play GTA 6 at launch?
Possibly not. Datamined information suggests GTA 6 needs firmware 14.10, though Sony and Rockstar have not confirmed it. Public jailbreaks reported so far work on older firmware, and updating usually removes the jailbreak.
Can Sony ban a modified PS5?
Sony’s terms prohibit modified software, and its Terms of Service allow console suspension. A suspended console loses access to PSN, online play and the PlayStation Store. Confirmed reports of bans in this latest wave are limited, but the risk is real.
Does a PS5 bought from an unauthorised seller in India get warranty?
It may not. Sony India says its warranty applies to products bought from authorised resellers, and that products from unauthorised resellers may not be eligible for the one-year limited warranty.
Is it safe to update a second-hand PS5?
Updating through Sony’s official system software menu is the normal process. Sony warns that consoles that have been modified may not install official updates properly, so ask the seller about the console’s history first.
